Avian influenza – situation in Viet Nam - update 8

The Ministry of Health has reported three new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus, including one fatality. Two cases have been confirmed at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) and one case has been confirmed at the Pasteur Institute, Ho Chi Minh City.

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 25-year-old female from South Jakarta District, DKI Jakarta Province died on 25 January 2010. Laboratory tests were positive for H5N1 virus infection. The case was possibly infected from direct contact with poultry.

Yellow fever in Guinea

On 4 January 2010, the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Guinea reported a case of yellow fever to the World Health Organization (WHO). The case occurred in the prefecture of Mandiana belonging to the Kankan region in the east of the country, near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. Côte d'Ivoire has recently conducted an outbreak response in the border health districts of Minignan and Madinani.

On 6 November 2009, The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Cote d'Ivoire reported to the World health Organization (WHO) a yellow fever outbreak of 10 suspected cases and 6 deaths in Minignan and Madinani health districts, Denguele region, in the north-western part of the country near the Guinea and Mali borders.
