Suspected Acute Haemorrhagic Fever in the Republic of the Congo update

Blood samples taken from one of the suspected cases in Sangha Region, Republic of Congo, tested negative for several viral haemorrhagic fevers (Ebola, Marburg, CCHF, Arenavirus). Additional laboratory investigations are ongoing. The tests were carried out by the Centre International de Recherches Médicales de Franceville (CIRMF) in Gabon. Samples from the other three suspected fatal cases could not be obtained .

WHO has received preliminary reports of five suspected cases, including three deaths, with acute haemorrhagic fever from Mokouangonda, an isolated forest village of about 100 inhabitants in Mokoke district, Region of Sangha, in northern Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville).

Avian influenza – situation in China

The Ministry of Health in China has announced a new confirmed human cases of H5N1 infection. The case is a 22-year-old pregnant female from Hubei Province. She had onset of symptoms on 23 May and died on 3 June. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate exposure to sick and dead poultry. Close contacts of the case are being monitored and to date all remain well.

On 11 May 2010 Bernhard-Nocht-Institute for Tropical Medicine in Germany reported that additional laboratory analyses conducted both in Germany and South Africa on the German tourist who was preliminarily diagnosed with Rift Valley Fever (RVF) following her return from South Africa, was in-fact infected with Rickettsia and not with RVF virus.

Avian influenza – situation in Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. A 45-year-old female from the city of Malang in East Java province developed symptoms on 22 February. She recovered and is in a healthy condition. The case disposed of dead chickens in the 4 days before onset of symptoms.

Rift Valley fever in South Africa- update

As of 27 April 2010, German health authorities reported a laboratory confirmed case of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in a traveller returning to Germany after a trip to South Africa from 17 March to 8 April 2010. The case, along with three travel companions, visited rural areas and game reserves along the coast of Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. On 7 April 2010, the case developed symptoms including fever, headache and a rash (exanthema). Almost concurrently a similar illness was reported in her travel companions. German health authorities are currently investigating the circumstances around infection in the confirmed case.

Polio in Tajikistan - Update

171 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) have been reported by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan from January to present. 32 of these cases are confirmed wild poliovirus type 1, results are pending for the remaining cases. The majority of these cases have an onset of paralysis within the past 3 weeks. There have been 12 deaths.

Polio in Tajikistan, first importation since Europe certified polio-free

Poliovirus type 1 has been detected in diagnostic samples from cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) from Tajikistan. This represents the first importation of poliovirus in the WHO European Region since it was certified polio-free in 2002.
